Ergonomics & Human Factors Engineering

4ourth Mobile people have been building digital products since before the terms “UX” existed. We have experience outside what is now the traditional digital space, and take a lot of our knowledge from academic research, and from older disciplines like human factors and ergonomics.

These both started just before the Second World War. The US Air Force found that the technology was improving past the point humans could make it work well, or sometimes even survive it. So they implemented a scientific program to study the human factor in engineering.

This evolved over time to be informed by several scientific disciplines, most of all cognitive psychology and physiology. We’re rarely guessing how people work and why, but understand the underlying mechanisms of behavior and action.

Today, these fields overlap far too little with each other, and mostly mean the design of physical spaces and objects vs UX which is about on-screen experiences.

4ourth Mobile has experience designing across these fields. We have been involved in the design of hardware including mobile devices, control panels, and IoT devices. We understand display technology, radios, plugs and ports, buttons, batteries and more. And most of all, we understand how people work with devices, and can design digital and on-screen solutions that integrate seamlessly with their hardware.

Contact 4ourth Mobile today, and learn how we can help make your digital experiences work in the real world.
